1 ¶ And when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint Him. 2 And very early in the morning on the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun. 3 And they said among themselves, "Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulcher?" 4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away, for it was very large. 5 And entering into the sepulcher, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were frightened. 6 And he said unto them, "Be not afraid. Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. Behold the place where they laid Him. 7 But go your way. Tell His disciples and Peter that He goeth before you into Galilee. There shall ye see Him, as He said unto you." 8 And they went out quickly and fled from the sepulcher, for they trembled and were amazed; neither said they any thing to any man, for they were afraid. 9 ¶ Now when Jesus had risen early the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven devils. 10 And she went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. 11 And they, when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, believed not. 12 After that, He appeared in another form unto two of them as they walked and went into the country. 13 And they went and told it unto the rest, but neither did they believe them. 14 ¶ Afterward He appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat; and He upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said unto them, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe: In My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them. They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." 19 ¶ So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, He was received up into Heaven, and sat at the right hand of God. 20 And they went forth and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the Word with signs following. Amen. |
v1-18 The Risen Servant. Matt 28:1-15; Luke 24:1-49; John 20:1-23. Jesus had died to pay for the sins of the world, but it would be a waste if He stayed dead because a believer would be forgiven but still die. Jesus had to rise again so that a believer knew they too had eternal life. The resurrection of Jesus is part of the Gospel message, it prove what He claimed, the Son of God. 1 Cor 15:1-8. For order of events and appearances see resurrection. Jesus had told the disciples that He would return from the dead Mark 9:9-10; Mark 10:34 but they had not taken in the meaning of this truth. When the women came early to the tomb they were not expecting Him to have risen from the dead. They had in fact purchased more spices to complete the burial that Joseph Arimathea and Nicodemus had rushed to do on the day of crucifixion. Mark 15:45-46. Luke 24:10 tells us that Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, Salome and Joanna were the first to visit the tomb that morning. They had probably wondered how they were going to move the stone from the tomb entrance but on arrival they see the stone has been rolled away already, Matt 28:2-4. On entering the tomb they see a young man, an angel. Mark only mentions one angel Luke 24:4 tells us that there were two angels. v6,7 The angels were there to deliver a message to the women, "Jesus has risen, tell His disciples and Peter, He will meet you in Galilee.." Note the special message to Peter. Keep in mind that Peter helped Mark write this Gospel. v9 John 20:2-10 tells us that after telling Peter and John, Mary Magdalene stays at the tomb and there Jesus appeared to her. John 20:11-18. After this He appears to the other women Matt 28:9-10. v10 The disciples are very sad, they just do not believe what the women are telling them, "He is alive." v12,13 Jesus appears to two on the road to Emmaus, but still the disciples do not believe. v14 The first appearance of Jesus in the upper room was just to ten disciples as Thomas was missing. John 20:19-23. Jesus is sad that they did not believe. Jesus reveals Himself to many believers in the next forty days, giving them commissions and instructions before He returns to heaven. Acts 1:4-8. v15,16 a quick reading of these verses suggest that baptism is part of salvation, but other scriptures indicate that only belief is needed on its own. e.g. John 3:16-18; John 3:36. v17-18 Most of these signs did appear during the time of the apostles and early church. Some still claim they can pick up snakes, if they are bitten and die, it is due to lack of faith. This is a similar temptation Satan put Jesus through Matt 5:5-7 "God will take care of you." Force God to perform a miracle to prove your faith, "to show off!!!!" God will look after His people but he does not have to if the person deliberately puts themselves in danger. v19,20 The work of the Servant now changes, now His servants are taking His message of salvation to the world, seeking to do His will and work. |
